Poetry / Re: Analysis and Synthesis: I Grew Up & The Urban Indian
« on: November 28, 2009, 11:31:54 pm »
The narrators in both "The Urban Indian" and "I Grew Up" are native but do not live in native reserve. The narrator in "The Urban Indian" admitted that he is an urban Indian and remembers the reserve where he grew up. The narrator says, "The reserve is still deep within me." This means the narrator likes the reserve. However, the narrator does not want to go back there because the narrator already got adapted to life in Toronto. In contrast, the narrator of "I Grew Up" languishes for the reserve. "I grew up thinking 'i'm never going to leave this place"(line 4-6), this means that the narrator did not want to leave there, but maybe it can't be helped. And the narrator describes the reserve is very beautiful.

Poetry / Re: Echoes: Experience ~ Dorothy Livesay

What is the poem talking about?
The poem is talking about experience.

What does "Experience" mean in stanza one?
In stanza one, "Experience" means that experience other people tell to you is not your own. The speaker’s parents or teachers teach their experience to him but the speaker cannot understand and feel the bitter of life.

What does "Experience" mean in stanza two? Why would the narrator choose to experience the bitter and the sweet?
In stanza two, the speaker learned “Experience” that sometimes there were “bitter” (hardships) and “sweet” (happy events) in the life.

Poetry / Re: Echoes: Reach Out and Touch ~ Maxine Tynes

Write a themes statement for this poem.
This poem talks about racism and criticize it.
In the poem, a woman discriminates a black woman.

What is the tone or the mood of this poem?
The tone of "Reach Out and Touch" is sad.
For example, "I turn and smile for you, but you're already lost in the silence and the fear that motherlove wraps you in." The black woman wants to show her kindness but the woman avoids and guards against her.

The mood is sarcastic.
The mother does not allow her daughter to touch the black woman even if she does not do any bad deed.

The theme of this  poem "Packing for the Future: Instructions," by Lorna Crozier, is that people need other people's support and help to prepare their future. You always recieve supports from people around you. In the poem, the speaker says, "Mistrust no one who offers you water from a well, a songbird's feather, something that's been mended twice."(line11to14) This means that you should trust people who help you because they can give a wish and make effot for you. If you trust them, you will also believe that they help you when you are in difficult situation. Then you do not need to worry about hardships in your life and you can live more happily, you can "Always travel lighter than the heart."(line40,41) Therefore, the help is neccessary for your life and you should treasure it.
